From Global Recognition to Value-Based Classroom Practice at GSM

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) continues to be recognised among the world’s leading institutions in Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies, reflecting its strength in Islamic intellectual tradition. At IIUM Graduate School of Management (GSM), this recognition is translated into how knowledge is taught and applied in the classroom. Rather than treating business education as purely technical, learning is structured to emphasise interpretation, judgement, and responsibility in decision-making. This is evident in how financial and management accounting is taught. Today’s strategic leaders are not those who memorise formulas, but those who understand what the numbers mean. Financial information is introduced as a tool to answer key business questions: Where is the money going? Which customers are truly profitable? Are we pricing correctly? Are we investing wisely? Are we growing sustainably? Students learn to read financial statements as a narrative, understand cost behaviour, and evaluate whether decisions make sense beyond the numbers. More importantly, they develop the confidence to question assumptions, challenge budgets, and engage in strategic discussions. This approach transforms learners from functional specialists into strategic contributors. Regardless of background, the ability to interpret financial information becomes essential for effective decision-making. In this way, value-based education is not presented as an abstract concept, but embedded in how students think, analyse, and act!

Islamic Finance at GSM: Where Theory Meets Practice

At the GSM, IIUM, learning Islamic Finance goes far beyond textbooks. Students are immersed in dynamic discussions that explore not just what Islamic finance is, but how it works in practice, questioning real industry structures, and engaging with its challenges in the field. A recent class brought this approach to life through a roundtable discussion on the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), analysed through a maslahah–mafsadah lens. Students debated its economic and social benefits against practical concerns such as cost, sustainability, and governance while developing the ability to think critically and make balanced judgments. From foundational concepts to financial structuring and broader economic impact, the course equips students with more than knowledge. It builds a sharper, more thoughtful perspective on Islamic finance. With diverse perspectives in the room, discussions become more grounded, insightful, and impactful, reflecting the realities of today’s Islamic finance landscape. In response to growing interest, GSM will open this course to open learners starting next semester (May 2026). Professionals and aspiring learners alike will have the opportunity to join, contribute, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Let’s join our Islamic Finance class that challenges how you think and prepares you for how Islamic finance really works.

Half-Baked Work Was Never An Option: The Mindset That Set Him Apart

GSM Alumni Stories: Where It All Began 🎓 At IIUM Graduate School of Management, every alumni has a story and for our MBA Class of 2016 graduate, Saiyid A Syakir Al-Edrus, FCCA, it’s a story of professionalism shaped through consistency and high standards. During his time pursuing an MBA at IIUM Graduate School of Management, Saiyid described himself as a typical student. However, his peers often entrusted him with the role of group leader and editor for assignments, recognising his “strict quality control and eye for detail.” For Saiyid, it was never just about completing tasks, it was about upholding professionalism. He believed in delivering work that was complete, refined, and of high quality. As he puts it, submitting half-baked work was never an option, just as he would not deliver anything less than his best to his bosses and clients today. This mindset, nurtured during his MBA journey, continues to define his professional approach and commitment to excellence. Below is the thought shared by him on our MBA programme. 1. Where were you in your career before joining GSM, and where are you now? I was a Tax Specialist in Axiata Group Bhd in May 2013 when I was accepted. Currently I am a licensed tax agent and Executive Director of boutique tax firm, Morison LC Tax Sdn Bhd. 2.What part of the GSM experience had the biggest impact on you? Networking with fellow experienced students from various backgrounds and expertise (eg engineering, IT, marketing, management etc). The diverse views from fellow students helped me in understanding nuances of leadership among astute peers and taking lead in group studies and projects.  3. How did GSM shape your values, mindset, or leadership style? GSM provided the Islamic grounding, where each action is an ibadah and governed with ethics, which starts from niat or intention. From there, my personal values of “Integrity, Honesty & Compassion” and leadership naturally form a style of compassionate, attentive yet firm approach when I lead my department today.

She Didn’t Choose Between Career, Family, And Education – She Chose Growth

Where It All Began At IIUM Graduate School of Management, we celebrate alumni who redefine what it means to grow both professionally and personally. For Dr. Norulaiza binti Mohamad Daud, the best student of MBA Class of 2016, her journey was a testament to resilience and balance. While pursuing her MBA at IIUM Graduate School of Management, she continued to excel in her career successfully delivering key projects and earning a well-deserved promotion. At the same time, she remained devoted to her role at home as a wife and mother to her two boys. Rather than holding her back, these responsibilities became her driving force. Her MBA journey pushed her to rise to every challenge, proving that growth is always possible even when life demands so much from you. Below is the thought shared by her on our MBA programme.  1. Where were you in your career before joining GSM, and where are you now?I was with PETRONAS during my MBA journey from May 2014 to December 2015 and proudly celebrated my convocation in November 2016. In November 2022, after more than 25 years of service in the banking and oil and gas industry with organisations such as Arab Malaysian Bank, BP Malaysia, Boustead Petroleum Marketing, Shell Malaysia Trading, and PETRONAS, I made the difficult yet intentional decision to leave PETRONAS and take early retirement at the age of 47. This transition gave me the space to fully commit to completing my DBA Programme with UWTSD, UK ; a decision that marked a new chapter of growth, purpose, and self‑reinvention. It also allowed me to inspire my sons to strive for their dreams and to keep learning, growing, and adding value to themselves. Learning demands courage, dedication and the willingness to step into the unknown. As my eldest pursues his engineering studies in the United States, and my youngest prepares to begin his journey in Japan, I hope they carry this lesson with them that growth never stops, and those who are brave will always find new paths to rise. 2.What part of the GSM experience had the biggest impact on you?The opportunity to ‘unlearn and relearn’ has refined the way I view the world, bringing greater structure and a more holistic appreciation to my thinking. With almost 17 years of industry experience behind me at the time I started the MBA programme, stepping back into university life while working full time has been quite challenging, yet it was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. That journey was especially meaningful when I was honoured with the ‘Best Student for the MBA Programme’ award in 2016, a recognition that reaffirmed the value of pushing beyond my comfort zone and investing in my own growth. 3. How did GSM shape your values, mindset, or leadership style? The programme has been thoughtfully designed to strengthen not only the technical components of the course, but also the essential soft skills that shape effective leaders from managing project teams and delivering impactful presentations to writing strong business reports and building meaningful connections with local and international students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. This holistic blend of learning enriched me both professionally and personally, and its impact was evident when I was promoted in 2016 from Principal to Custodian (General Manager), a milestone that affirmed the value of continuous growth and development. 4. Why would you recommend this programme to working professionals? This programme will certainly add value to both personal and professional growth. Its blend of technical learning, leadership development, communication skills, and cross‑cultural collaboration has the ability to transform the way you think and lead. I definitely encourage professionals to take this step, it is never too late to unlearn, relearn, and elevate yourself to the next stage of your journey.
